Natural Disasters such as Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Floods, Tornadoes, and Wildfires, as well as Man-made Disasters, such as terrorism, chemical spills, industrial plant explosions, civil unrest, and the like, can strike at anytime, and often without any advance warning. For any large-scale disaster, one should not rely on governmental authorities being able to assist immediately afterwards. Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy are some recent examples of government's inability to respond adequately to such events. Even the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) realizes this, and asks all Americans to do three key things: Have Emergency Survival Supplies, Develop a Family Emergency Plan, and be knowledgeable about the different types of disasters and emergencies that may affect their area, as well as the appropriate responses.
Every family should be prepared to survive without outside assistance for at least 72 hours after a disaster. They should also consider having two or more emergency supply kits, such as a large one at home, and a smaller kit in their vehicles or wherever else they spend their time. Some basic recommended items for an Emergency Supply/Survival kit include drinking water, non-perishable food, battery powered or hand crank AM/FM radio, NOAA Weather Radio with extra batteries, Flashlight and extra batteries, whistle, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for sanitiation, tools to turn off utilities, can opener, and local maps. Additional items might include prescription medications, pet supplies, important documents, cash, emergency reference material, First Aid supplies, sleeping bags or blankets, change of clothing appropriate to the climate/season, unscented chlorine bleach for purifiying water, fire extinguishers, waterproof matches, personal hygeine items, mess kits, paper plates and cups, paper and pencil, and games for children. Most experts recommend having these supplies packed in easily transportable backpacks or duffelbags in the event that you must leave your home in order to remain safe (known as "bugging out").
